Samsung announced a new 128 GB, 3-bit NAND-based eMMC 5.0 storage solution for mobile devices. Mind you, this
isn't the same 128GB flash memory storage that the company unveiled back in February (and is used inside the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge flagships). Instead, the new memory is "value-focused", being made for mid-range handsets and tablets.
The new 128 GB eMMC 5.0 flash memory storage can deliver 260 MB per second for sequential data reading, up to 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) for random data
read, and up to 5,000 IOPS for random write operations. According to Samsung, that's enough for advanced multi-tasking operations, as well as for high definition video processing. The company hopes that, with the introduction of the new product, it can "take the lead in the expansion of high-density mobile storage."
Samsung doesn't say when we'll be able to actually buy mid-range smartphones and tablets with 128 GB of storage space. In any case, it will probably happen soon, with Samsung-made devices likely being the first to offer such an impressive amount of internal memory.
